What makes a great, natural wig?

to this!

Learning how to make these and completing it i’ve found some key features that make a wig look very natural and as close to undetectable as possible!

The foundation. The foundation is everything. Anything good needs a solid foundation. When making the wig, i made my own. Personally, this is the hardest part of the wig making process. This was made of Terylene lace which is thicker than the fine lace that sits at the front and because its made on a mould of your head, it fits like a glove. This adds to the flatness of the overall appearance of the wig.

Lace - probably one of the most important factors of a good wig! It has to be authentic swiss. The thinner the better, but tbh you need to know the different types of lace and match it to the purpose of the wig. For example, in this blog post, I talked about how i knew the purpose of the wig was to be for everyday use, so to get as much longevity out of it as possible i chose the 40 denier thicker lace,(denier refers to the thickness of a lace) if i was to go for a 15 denier lace (HD) then its more than likely the amount of uses to get out of the wig would be very low before it would cause wear and tear. Which is why i didn’t understand the HD lace craze. There is much more to wig making than getting an undetectable lace melt because some wigs have a good melt but still look like a hair hat, which brings me to my next point.

Density - The density of the wig/closure/frontal will make or break the lace piece. When its really thick, it has that really wiggy look which isn’t natural. I never use a lot of hair when doing these lace pieces and it allows the hair to lay flat and when i need to switch up a parting for example i never need to fight with the hair by using any kind of hot combs etc. But this also has something to do with another factor, which is direction of hair growth.

Direction of hair growth - when the hair strands of the lace piece go in different directions it will look more natural because its imitating how natural hair growth actually is. When it’s all going in one direction - up close, it won’t look natural because its too uniform.
