6x6 closure/ mini frontal wig

5 min read

So I’d finished this closure and wanted to share some of the specs of it. This is my third lace piece I’ve made from scratch so far.

The lace closure itself has a 6x6 parting space using a 40 denier lace. I was surprised at how well the lace melted on the model’s skin because compared to the other denier’s, its pretty thick. I chose a 40 denier because as its thicker, its way more durable so it would be more suitable for an everyday wig.

40 denier lace is usually used by wig makers to make wigs for characters in theatre. These characters would be reusing these wigs for multiple performances so it would be imperative to use a strong enough lace to withstand the multiple uses.

To make the wig, instead of making the lace piece separately, i incorporated it into the wig cap which allowed a super flat foundation and in turn a super flat finish for the wig. The rest of the wig were tracks/ bundles of up to 30”.

For the knotting technique, i would use a single strand of hair and use single knots only so that it would be micro and wouldn’t need any bleaching. By doing this you have the illusion of an actual scalp throughout the fine lace and not just at the hairline. Because of the level of detail and technique this type of wig making uses, these types of projects could be completed within days/ weeks/ months. This piece in particular took me about two weeks - working on it on and off. Yes- it takes long. Yes - you need a lot of patience but tbh when you put on a Netflix series you really just zone out and get a lot of it done. Also, the results are unmatched. They’re like mini masterpieces, it has really become another art form for me. This is the only type of wig making best used for high definition, close up camera work because of the types of lace used as well as these knotting methods, among st other factors that i will cover in my next blog post.

The main tech i used at the centre of the closure is the cross knot method, this is where one row goes left and the next row goes right. This technique allows more movement when styling the wig and has more realism to the closure when parting, as supposed to all the hair going on one direction. Here’s a demo:
